Friday, Phillies slugger Jim Thome hit a walk off home run against the Tampa Bay Rays. Prior though to Thome heading to the plate, Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon offered up $5,000 dollars to Thome IF he did in fact hit a home run.
Well, when Thome successful in hitting the deep ball, Papelbon was a man of his word writing a check to teammate for the exact amount of $5,000.
But before getting all astonished at what Papelbon offered up lets take a quick look at Papelbon’s financial perspective of this.
First, Thome was given the chance to hit the walk off after Papelbon blew a save opportunity giving up 2 runs on 3 hits in the 9th. The Phillies had a 6-4 lead heading into the final inning. Second, for 2012 Papelbon makes $11,000,058 dollars which means the $5,000 dollars is 1/2200 of his current salary.
Of course though not every person in the United States has the opportunity to make over a $11 million dollars a season like Papelbon does but if you compare it to a $100,000 annual salary (which is still really good), 1/2200 of that would be $45 dollars.
Thanks to The Big Lead for doing the math on that one.
