The Detroit Pistons unveiled a name and logo for their new G-League affiliate which will be based right in downtown Detroit.
That new team will be dubbed the Motor City Cruise who will begin play at the new Wayne State University stadium in 2021-2022 pending what happens with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The name was decided by fan vote much like the team did when they decided to go with the Grand Rapids Drive who seem to be staying around in the G-League with no NBA affiliate. There are still teams within the Association who still don’t have a G-League affiliate so it’s possible they latch on to one of those teams, however, no official announcement has been made.
For the Pistons though having their G-League affiliate right in town will have its benefits in terms of player development since team coaches won’t have to drive across the state in order to see G-League players play.
As far as the name and logo itself, it’s okay. It’s not terrible but it’s not great either. I’m not shocked the team went with the automotive theme which is fine, what bugs me most though about the logo itself though is the slight asymmetrical approach.
