University of Maine junior right wing Gustav Nyquist who was recently named a top ten finalist for the Hobey Baker Award for the second straight year has agreed to terms with the Detroit Red Wings. Nyquist will join the Wings’ affiliate the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL for the final stretch of the season. This is according to The Bangor Daily News.

The paper cites a person close to the situation saying that Nyquist will sign an Amateur Tryout Contract (ATO) so he can begin his pro career immediately. Nyquist will then sign a two-way contract with the Red Wings that will reportedly take into effect this summer.

A two way contract in the NHL means that Nyquist will have a different pay scale depending on where he plays, Grand Rapids or Detroit.

Nyquist who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 NHL Draft led the Black Bears in scoring for the second straight year with 18 goals and 33 assists in 36 games. According to The Bangor Daily News Nyquist’s 51 points tie him for 10th in the country and his 1.42 points per game are sixth best.
