The Cleveland Guardians used a massive late-inning rally to defeat the Detroit Tigers 6–1 in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card series, evening things at one game apiece and setting up a decisive Game 3 in Cleveland.
Cleveland grabbed an early lead in the first inning when George Valera connected for a solo home run off Casey Mize. Detroit tied it up in the fourth, but despite loading the bases multiple times, the Tigers’ offense couldn’t deliver in the clutch. They stranded 15 runners and went just 1-for-15 with men in scoring position, a costly stat line in October baseball.
The game turned in the top of the 8th. Brayan Rocchio broke the tie with a solo homer, and just a few batters later, Bo Naylor crushed a three-run shot to put the Guardians firmly in control. They added another insurance run before handing the ball to closer Cade Smith, who worked the ninth to seal the win.
Mize lasted only three innings for Detroit, giving up one run, while Guardians starter Tanner Bibee kept the Tigers’ bats quiet through 4 ⅔ innings.
