Coming into Michigan this season, defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has inherited a huge task of trying to turn around one of college football’s worst defenses in 2010.
So what are one of Mattison’s strategy’s in tackling the problems of the defense so last year is just a distant memory?
How about “two starting lineups” for the defense.
According to Kyle Meinke of AnnArbor.com, Mattison plans to emphasized the need for his players to be versatile to give his new 4-3 scheme more of a kick. Furthermore he plans to employ several complex packages on top of keeping all of his players fresh.
“We’re not going to go out there and play one defense,” Mattison said after Tuesday’s practice. “We need to give our guys opportunities to make plays.”
Mattison also isn’t taking anyone lightly going into this season. Even though Western Michigan is a mid-major school, Mattison believes that what Alex Carder, the Broncos’ QB brings to the table will be a very good test for his developing defense.
