The Lions are gonna be buyers when it comes to the NFL trade deadline this season which will be here in the next week and a half. And when Detroit does pull the trigger on a trade, the consensus is that it’ll be for a pass rusher to help alleviate the loss of Aidan Hutchinson who broke his leg and is out for the remainder of the regular season.
But what about if the Lions go an additional route, say a wide receiver?
That’s the feeling that’s emerging among NFL circles is that not only could the Lions go after a wide receiver but one of the bigger names on the market Cooper Kupp of the Rams per Gilbert Manzano of SI.com.
“If the Rams are no longer prioritizing a postseason push, that could increase the odds of Snead trading Kupp to a fellow NFC team. Snead is familiar with Lions GM Brad Holmes—the two worked together for many years in Los Angeles and St. Louis. The two GMs also worked out the blockbuster 2021 trade that sent Stafford to the Rams and Jared Goff to the Lions.”

“Given how that trade worked well for both sides, perhaps these two teams should do business again. Kupp is already familiar with Goff and he would aid the Lions’ dominant offense in various ways. Detroit would be a bigger headache to defend against the run, with how well Kupp thrives in doing the dirty work. And receiver depth wouldn’t hurt after Jameson Williams was recently suspended for two games. Not many will care about the second-round pick in Detroit if this season ends with the Lombardi trophy.”
First, why… why would the Lions make a trade for a wide receiver when they currently have more than a formidable duo in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams and a very good supporting cast? It’s seriously doubtful that the impending Jameson Willaims suspension has anything to do with the rumors or any potential interest coming from Lions GM Brad Holmes. Speaking of Holmes, maybe it’s his previous connection to the Rams’ organization or the fact that the Lions are legit Super Bowl contenders, and an arms race for wide receivers is a very real thing after Kansas City just traded for DeAndre Hopkins.
Either way, despite the odds, Cooper Kupp to the Lions still seems like a massive stretch at this point.
