Fernando Alonso was the luckiest driver during the Formula One season opener at the Grand Prix of Australia Sunday, and he didn’t even finish the race.
Fortunately for Alonso, he was able to walk away from this horrific looking crash that sent his McLaren barreling off the track, and into the gravel pit sideways before resting upside down against the retaining wall.
We’ve certainly seen less horrific looking crashes result in greater tragedy. The Dale Earnhardt wreck at Daytona back in 2001 definitely comes to mind. However there’s also those up over end crashes that are as bad as they look like the the Jeff Krosnoff one in Toronto back in 1996 and Greg Moore fatality at Fontana in 1999. Both of those drivers like Earnhardt lost their lives as a result.
