ESPN: The Tigers will “seriously consider” offers for Tarik Skubal

The talk surrounding the Tigers considering the idea of trading their ace this offseason continues with ESPN’s Buster Olney now weighing in.

In a post on ESPN.com, Olney says that the Tigers are going to “seriously consider” offers for Skubal, who is coming off another dominant season with Detroit and is in line to win his second straight Cy Young.

Other teams believe the Tigers will seriously consider moving him if they can glean what they want in a trade — and there is every reason to expect a significant bidding war for Skubal, who will be eligible for free agency after next season.

The Mariners are expected to be among the teams that go after Skubal, to bring him back to the city where he attended college. The Mets, of course, have an acute need for an ace to lead their rotation — a need borne out through their late-season collapse — and they have the sort of major-league-ready young talent that the Tigers will want, like Jonah Tong. The Red Sox are well-positioned to make a run at Skubal, if they want.

The only sure thing in this situation, it seems, is that Skubal will not sign a long-term deal with Detroit before he reaches free agency, and that will frame the Tigers’ decision-making.

If the rumors are true that the Tigers and Skubal are genuinely $250 million apart on a new contract, then of course, they will take any offer seriously, so this line of thinking from Olney shouldn’t be surprising. The only thing that seems certain at this point is that nothing is imminent. The Tigers don’t appear to be close to trading Skubal, and it certainly doesn’t sound like an extension will be announced soon. It still feels like anything is possible—whether that means the Tigers trading their ace for a bag, heading into the season and rolling the dice, or the team completing a deal, as Jesse Rogers of ESPN calls a “test” for owner Chris Ilitch.
