New Dodgers ownership said they would drastically alter the team and they continue to make good on that word.
News broke Friday that the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox were discussing a blockbuster deal and Saturday morning it became official.
Going to the Dodgers are first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, outfielder Carl Crawford, starting pitcher Josh Beckett and infielder Nick Punto. On their way to Boston are James Looney and four prospects which are rumored to be Allen Webster, Ivan De Jesus, Jerry Sands, and Rubby De La Rosa. According to Michael Silverman of The Boston Herald who first reported the deal, the Red Sox will pay just $12 million of the over $270 million owed to Beckett, Crawford, Gonzalez, and Punto.
Here’s how these four contracts breakdown according to MLBTradeRumors.com:
- Gonzalez will earn $21MM per season through 2016 and obtain a raise to $21.5MM for 2017-18. The total exceeds $130MM when accounting for the remainder his 2012 salary.
- Beckett will earn $15.75MM per season through 2014.
- Crawford will earn $20MM in 2013, $20.25MM in 2014, $20.5MM in 2015, $20.75MM in 2016 and $21MM in 2017.
- Punto earns $1.5MM per season through 2013.
The Dodgers continue huge strides in improving their roster via trade. Previously Los Angeles acquired Hanley Ramirez, Randy Choate, Brandon League, Shane Victorino, and Joe Blanton and absorbing more than $300 million in future salary obligations over the last month.

Both Beckett and Crawford had no trade stipulations in their contract with having the full 10-5 rights and Crawford having the limited no-trade clause. Both players obviously approved the deal and according to Buster Olney neither player asked for any kind of compensation in return.
Pretty remarkable that the 2 stars in BOS/LA deal who could've blocked deal have OK'd it without so much as insisting on anything in return.
