Did Raffi Torres deserve a suspension?

Vancouver forward Raffi Torres certainly is no stranger to the big hit or having the NHL come down on him for those big hits. Prior to the end of the season, Torres was suspended four games for his head shot to Edmonton Oilers forward Jordan Eberle during a game on April 6, 2011. Eberle wasn’t injured on the play but Torres missed the remaining two games of the regular season and the first two games of the Canucks’ Western Conference Quarterfinals against the Chicago Blackhawks.

This past Sunday, Torres was eligible to return during Game 3 in Chicago in which his Vancouver Canucks enjoyed a 2-0 series lead heading into the game. During the game Torres didn’t let in his game and launched himself into Blackhawks’ defenseman Brent Seabrook. Torres ended up getting only a 2 minute minor penalty on the play and that’s it. Even after the game and despite the history that Torres has the NHL decided not to punish Torres any further.

Many fans and members of the media, including the Vancouver Sun believe Torres should have gotten more for his hit, especially when the NHL is trying to crack down on blind side hits to the head.

Vancouver went on to win Game 3 by a score of 3-2 and took a 3-0 series lead over the defending Stanley Cup Champions.
