Although its been more than 10 years since an on ice incident left former Colorado Avalanche Center Steve Moore paralyzed, the civil case between Moore and Todd Bertuzzi has finally been settled before reaching trial.
The incident itself took place on February 16th, 2004 when Bertuzzi punched Moore from behind in a blowout game, driving Mooreโs head and neck to the ice and fracturing his spine. Mooreโs career was ended with the incident, and Bertuzzi has continued to play until this last 2013-14 season. He is currently a free agent after not being offered another contract by the Detroit Red Wings whom heโs played for since 2009.
Originally Mooreโs legal team was seeking $68 million dollars in damages after their original demand was a โmereโ $38 million. The amount of the actual settlement hasnโt been made public yet and may never be.
Todd Bertuzzi pleaded guilty to criminal assault causing bodily harm for the hit and was sentenced in 2006 to one year probation and 80 hours of community service in the criminal portion of the incident.
