The Detroit Tigers have re-signed right-handed reliever Kyle Finnegan to a two-year, $19 million contract, securing a key piece of their bullpen moving forward.
Finnegan, who joined Detroit at the 2025 trade deadline, quickly established himself as one of the Tigers’ most reliable late-inning arms. In 16 appearances with the club last season, he recorded a 1.50 ERA while picking up four saves and limiting opponents’ hard contact.
The 33-year-old’s strong finish played a major role in Detroit’s decision to bring him back. After arriving from Washington, Finnegan made adjustments to his pitch mix — particularly increasing usage of his splitter — which helped boost his strikeout numbers and overall effectiveness.
From a roster perspective, the move gives the Tigers stability at the back end of games without a long-term financial commitment. The contract is viewed as a cost-efficient way to retain a proven reliever while preserving payroll flexibility for other needs.
Finnegan is expected to factor prominently into Detroit’s high-leverage plans moving forward; however, it’ll be interesting to see just how manager AJ Hinch executes those high-leverage situations with Finnegan, whether it be in a ninth-inning-closer role or more of a setup role in the eighth.
