With the Tigers signing first baseman Prince Fielder to a huge nine-year, $214 million dollar contract, the general feeling was Detroit was no longer in the running for Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.
In recent months, the Tigers have reportedly been very interested in the Cuban outfielder who recently gained residency in the Dominican Republic and is awaiting the MLB to grant him free agency.
However, plenty of people in baseball according to MLBTradeRumors.com aren’t sure if the Fielder signing fully takes the Tigers out of the running, especially with owner Mike Ilitch’s win right now mentality. Simply put no one saw the Tigers signing Prince Fielder and they ended up doing just that. With that said who’s to say they won’t go out and get Cespedes at this point.
Furthermore, Danny Knobler of CBS Sports tweeted that Cespedes would prefer to play somewhere other than Miami. This could perhaps play into the Tigers’ favor considering Miami and the Chicago Cubs were seen as the high bidders for Cespedes.
Edwin Jackson making a return to Motown?
Edwin Jackson, who last pitched for the Tigers back in 2009 is a free agent and is considering a one-year deal according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com.
The Tigers, who still need to fill a spot in their rotation could be interested especially if Jackson is willing to sign that one-year deal.
Oh yeah, Jackson is a Scott Boras client who as we all know now has a pretty good working relationship with Mike Ilitch.
