Despite shaky scrimmage, Tyler VanTubbergen still Western’s backup QB

Bronco’s head coach Billy Cubit was visibly upset with the performance of reshirt sophomore QB Tyler VanTubbergen at Thursday’s scrimmage. VanTubbergen finished 10-for-21 passing for 73 yards, with a touchdown and an INT, playing with both the first and second units.

Cubit however made it clear that VanTubbergen was still his guy for the backup QB position…

“The problem with Tyler is he didn’t go through spring ball (because of elbow surgery) and then he goes through the summer and just does 7-on-7 drills (without a pass rush),” Cubit said.

“His greatest strength is he’s got a great arm. But then sometimes his greatest weakness is he’s got a great arm, because he holds the ball too long. This is what kind of happened to him last year, then all of a sudden he got in a rhythm and figured it out. He’ll figure out. I’m not real concerned with him. He’ll get it. He’s a talented guy. I though Mike did some really good things, too. I feel good about the quarterbacks.”
