Steelers first-round selection Derrick Harmon was carted off the field in what is now being described as a knee sprain during Pittsburgh’s 19-10 preseason win over the Carolina Panthers Thursday night.
The injury occurred when Pittsburgh cornerback James Pierre picked off Panthers quarterback Jack Plummer in the second quarter. After the play, Harmon walked over the sideline and went into the blue medical tent before eventually being carted off into the locker room (h/t Nick Farabaugh of PennLive.com).
After the game, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that Harmon suffered a knee sprain and that he was waiting for further evaluation according to Teresa Varley of the team’s official website.q
The initial diagnosis seems good for the 22-year-old who recorded one tackle before leaving the game with the injury. However, the Steelers will certainly be holding their breath as more tests come back with the hope that no ligament damage could extend the shelf time for the 21st overall pick.
