There’s a couple of things that you don’t want to see appear next to each other when reading about the Lions in training camp. Some of those things include, knee, surgery and Dr. James Andrews.
Unfortunately for the Lions they’ve already seen some of those terms appear in the training camp reports and now we’ve seen our first Dr. James Andrews mention.
According to Mlive.com, Lions safety Louis Delmas underwent knee surgery performed by Dr. Andrews Monday to help an ailing left knee that has very much limited the defensive back during training camp.
The team wouldn’t comment on how long Delmas would be out after originally being limited forprecautionary measures.
“The one guy that has been down a little bit longer than expected has been Delmas, but we’re not going to put him out there if he’s still sore,” Schwartz previously said. “Delmas has played a lot of football for us and does well. It gives other guys some opportunity to step in and get more reps.
“We’re not at the point now that we can’t go out and accomplish anything. We still got a lot of work to do. We got a lot of young players back there that need every single rep we can give them.”
This isn’t the first time Delmas has been hampered by knee issues. Last season he was held out five games after having surgery on his left knee. He eventually returned to player in the Wild Card game against New Orleans but wasn’t at 100 percent.
In the wake of Delmas’ surgery, Erik Coleman is now listed as the starting free safety.
UPDATE: According to head coach Jim Schwartz who spoke with the media after practice, Delmas is listed as week-to-week and it’s still hopeful that he’ll be ready for Week 1 of the regular season.
