One of the contributing architects of NBA superstars like Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Rasheed Wallace and Jerry Stackhouse Dean Smith has died at the age of 83. The legendary coach who helped the Tar Heels reach 11 Final Fours and win two National Champions reportedly died peacefully Saturday night according to his family.
“Coach Dean Smith passed away peacefully the evening of February 7 at his home in Chapel Hill, and surrounded by his wife and five children,” said his family in a statement. “We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as arrangements are made available to the public. Thank you.”
Smith was also a pioneer of civil rights which Richard Lipchick highlight’s in an ESPN.com piece from 2011. His legendary career also saw him be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom back in 2013.
