Detroit

Welcome to NFL offseason season. Where one sentence at the Combine turns into a full blown trade saga before lunch.

This week’s episode stars Lions running back David Montgomery.

During NFL Combine chatter, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Montgomery “wants out” of Detroit and that the Lions would look for a Day 3 draft pick in return. That is the kind of sentence that travels fast. By the time you read it, it already has three graphics and a debate show segment attached.

There was only one problem.

Montgomery did not get the memo.

The veteran back responded on social media and denied the report. Flat out. No trade request. No demand. No dramatic farewell tour. Just a public pushback against the idea that he is trying to leave Detroit.

So now what?

Montgomery’s role has shifted. That part is real. Jahmyr Gibbs has become the lightning in Detroit’s backfield, and the offense has leaned into that explosiveness. Montgomery’s carries have dipped over the past two seasons. That is usage. That is football. That is not automatically a breakup.

But in February, reduced touches quickly turns into “wants out.” That is how the cycle works.

Montgomery remains under contract. The Lions have not announced they are shopping him. There is no official trade request. What exists is a report and a denial.

And now a fan base refreshing timelines.

Could Detroit listen to offers? Sure. Every team listens. Could this be smoke with no fire? Also sure. What we know is that the player involved says the rumor is wrong.

In other words, we are officially in peak offseason form.

For now, David Montgomery is still a Lion. The only thing that has been traded this week is common sense.
