During the NBA draft, most teams take the route of drafting younger players to eventually take the place of aging veterans that currently make-up their roster. Or often times in the first round you draft a hot prospect that’s ready to come in and play right away in the starting lineup.
David Kahn and the Minnesota Timberwolves went a different route however in the second round.
According to various sources now, Kahn took a 26-year-old player in Tanguy Ngombo who had been playing basketball in Qatar. Now mind you there seemed to be a run on foreign players in the second round in which not much was known about them. However, Ngombo seemed so under the radar that the video used by ESPN for him looked as though it was just taken from YouTube while his picture was taken after putting in a Google search for Ngombo.
The interesting thing to take from this is draft eligibility. The Blazers ended up making the pick on behalf of Minnesota after they acquired the pick in a trade with Dallas. However with Ngombo turning 27 in less than a month he is technically ineligible for the NBA Draft. Now if at all the Timberwolves have a case to keep the pick it’s that Ngombo’s NBA Draft profile had his date of birth at 1989. You would think though that Kahn would do a little more research then that of an NBA Draft profile.
Now Portland will not be penalized for the pick but it is still yet to be seen what’s going to happen with Minnesota. Stay tuned!
