So whatâs the most Lions thing that can ever happen?
Perhaps a coordinator falling asleep during a game?
Itâs happened, well at least thatâs what former Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky said during a guest appearance on former NFL defensive end Chris Longâs âGreen Lightâ podcast, when asked about the most âdysfunctionalâ thing heâs ever experienced while in Detroit.
âThe series is starting â the series â we just got like a change of possession. They had punted, the series is starting, we trot out for first down, and silence on the call,â Orlovsky said during the podcast. âOur offensive coordinator at the time had fallen asleep in the booth. In the booth. Our guys are on the field waiting for a play call, and all you hear is, (simulates snoring noises).
â(He) fell asleep in the middle of an NFL football game while we had the ball as the playcaller.â
Long jokingly replied, âI did always notice the lighting was a little off in that stadium.â
You can check out the audio below:
Iâm sure weâre wondering who the sleepy OC was but Orlovsky didnât name names. And unfortunately given the turnover of Lions offensive coordinators the list is pretty lengthy but given Orlovskyâs two stints in Detroit between 2005-2008 and then again from 2014-2016 the suspects include:
- ⢠Ted Tollner
- ⢠Mike Martz
- ⢠Jim Colletto
- ⢠Joe Lombardi
- ⢠Jim Bob Cooter
Now Orlovsky said the OC was in the booth in which case you may be able to narrow down the list a little more. From what I can remember, Joe Lombardi, Jim Bob Cooter and I believe Mike Martz all called plays from the sideline. That leaves Ted Tollner and Jim Colletto who I canât recall whether or not they were on the sideline or the booth.
Nonetheless if anything was âsame olâ Lionsâ this is it.
