During a first down attempt by Michigan in the fourth quarter of the Outback Bowl the referees brought out the chains to see if South Carolina was able to stop the drive. And it appeared the Gamecocks did indeed stop the drive by a matter of less than an inch
But this wasn’t the case…
The referee signaled first down after it was clear the attempt was short as Steve Spurrier and the rest of the South Carolina team went crazy.
To make matters worse the Gamecocks challenged the spot but it was all for not as everything was upheld.
The play ultimately didn’t hurt South Carolina as they held Michigan scoreless on the drive and scored a touchdown on their ensuing possession.
Still though… not the best showing by the NCAA officials.
