Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick announced Thursday that he’ll end his pregame protests which got nation-wide attention last season and will now stand for the National Anthem in 2017 according to ESPN.
Kaepernick no longer wants his method of protest to detract from the positive change he believes has been created, sources told ESPN. He also said the amount of national discussion on social inequality — as well as support from other athletes nationwide, including NFL and NBA players — affirmed the message he was trying to deliver.
As a means of protest, he began sitting during the national anthem in the 2016 preseason before taking a knee for the final preseason contest and 16 regular-season games.
So he’ll stand for the National Anthem next season a decision that ironically comes after the veteran quarterback announced that he’d walk away from a contract with the 49ers effectively making him a free agent.
So did Kaepernick solve all the problems that he was protesting in the first place like race relations and police brutality? Last time I checked Donald Trump is re-working his Muslim Ban while there’s an uptick in anti-semitism around the country.
Or is Kaepernick looking to make himself more marketable for a potential new team?
Kaepernick, for the most part had some good intentions with his protest. However it looks a little empty now that he’s looking for a paycheck.
