The first big upset of the college basketball season is in the books and it comes via a team that’s not stranger to providing those upsets.
Former Butler walk-on Alex Barlow, who was averaging 1.5 points per game, hit the game winning shot with three seconds left in overtime as the Bulldogs beat the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers 88-86 in OT.
The former Horizon League champion Bulldogs looked to be on their way to a regulation victory before Indiana’s Yogi Ferrell hit a three-pointer with just 6 seconds remaining in the second half. In the overtime session it was Indiana that looked to be ready to seal up the win as Butler got themselves into foul trouble and eventually surrendering a lead to the Hoosiers. Consecutive three-pointers by Rotnei Clarke and Chase Stigall gave the Bulldogs the lead back before Cody Zeller of Indiana scored immediately prior to Barlow’s game winner.
Zeller was fouled early and often by Butler scoring 10 of his 18 points from the free throw line.
Roosevelt Jones was tremendous for Butler scoring 16 points and collecting 12 rebounds before fouling out with just over two minutes remaining. Andrew Smith (7 points) also fouled out with about 1:40 minutes remaining.
