The news wasn’t good for Tigers outfielder Brennan Boesch Sunday as he learned that he would undergo season ending to repair a torn ligament in his thumb.
“I’m done,” he told reporters huddled around him. “I’m tentatively scheduled to get surgery on my thumb sometime this week. I don’t know when exactly. It’s one of those things where we tried to do everything.”
Boesch was originally injured on August 9th during an at-bat against the Cleveland Indians.
He tried to play through the pain, but struggled and at one point strained a bicep trying to compensate for the thumb injury. As of this week he was being fitted for a brace but nothing helped for him in the end.
“I started with injections and then a protective pad. I tried to change my swing,” said Boesch, who matured into one of the Tigers’ top run producers and hit .283 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs in 115 games this season. “I thought with my body and my pain tolerance, I’d be able to play through it, but I can’t.
“It’s the most frustrating thing I’ve ever had to deal with.”
Boesch had put together a nice season for himself after a horrible second half in 2010. He hit .283 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs.
With Boesch done for the season it would seem that Magglio Ordonez would get another crack at the starting right field position. The Tigers could also go with Andy Dirks who was just called up when the rosters expanded or utility man Don Kelly.
