Brazil moved on from the Round of 16 Saturday beating fellow South American rival Chile in an instant classic that had to be decided by penalties.
Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar came up with a pair of saves while Willian and Hulk missed their attempts enabling Gonzalo Jara to extend things to sudden death. However Jara’s final attempt hit the right goal post as Brazil survived to fight another day.
Perhaps it was a little justice for the hand ball called on Hulk 10 minutes into the second half that would have put Brazil up 2-1. Replays showed though that Hulk’s hand never touched the ball and the goal should have counted.
Despite that though, Chile was just inches away from ending Brazil’s run in extra time when Mauricio Pinilla hit the crossbar in the 120th minute. It would have given Chile the win.
