The first half between Eastern and Michigan looked very similar to Western and Michigan during the first game of the season. In both of these games Michigan out of the gate looked sloppy and slow but eventually turned it around in the second half getting the win.
According to Kyle Meinke of AnnArbor.com though, the slow starts are starting to concern Michigan QB Denard Robinson…
“We wanted to come out fast, and that’s what we’ve been focusing on,” Robinson said after the game. “There’s no reason (for the slow start). There’s no reason for it.”
Eastern Michigan dominated the first quarter and took a 3-0 lead midway through the second quarter. The Eagles held the advantage in total yards (140-32), first downs (7-2) and time of possession (10:35). Michigan QB Denard Robinson struggled throwing the ball at first missing on his first five passes while Michigan went three and out on two of its first three drives.
“We might be thinking a little too much out there,” junior safety Jordan Kovacs said. “I think we did a good job of making some adjustments to some of the funky things they were throwing at us.”
Again though like the Western game, Michigan eventually turned things around.
Denard Robinson ended up going 7/18 with 95 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also go things going on the ground when his air game wasn’t working so much. He was able to bust out a 52 yard run before finding Kevin Koger for a 9 yard TD pass giving the Wolverines a 7-3 lead in the second quarter. His (Robinson’s) work on the grounded ended up getting him 198 yards on 26 attempts with 1 touchdown.
Michigan RB Fitz Toussaint also had an impact after missing last week with a sore shoulder. He had 11 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown.
Next week Michigan welcomes in Brady Hoke’s former team San Diego State which should be a very emotional game for both Brady Hoke and the Aztecs of SD State. Meanwhile Eastern travels to Happy Valley to take on JoPa and the Penn State Nittany Lions.
