Tunnel Talk 217: Poppers, Penalties & the Black Arrow Debate | Detroit City FC The crew got dragged into the tunnel on a Wednesday they were supposed to have off. Red opens with a story about nearly taking leftover Fourth of July poppers on a date, and Alan’s absence becomes a disciplinary matter of questionable legitimacy. Eventually, somebody remembers there are three matches left in Detroit City FC’s regular season.

The crew breaks down the win over Birmingham, debates whether Le Rouge has found its playoff lineup, and asks the uncomfortable question: Will City score enough to survive a postseason match where one conceded goal might end the night? Darren Smith’s pursuit of a club scoring mark enters the conversation, along with several arguments about what those numbers mean.

Then comes the Black Arrow vote. Haruki, Kobe Hernandez, Carlos Herrera, and others make their cases for player of the year before the crew turns to Rhode Island predictions. Shout-outs somehow lead to Chattanooga, territory rights, promotion and relegation, and a grocery-store argument. Standard Tunnel Talk, more or less. ⚜️🎙️

Adam and Garret discuss the Lions through four games, concerns about the roster and performances, and the team’s $60 standing room tickets.

Detroit hockey brings questions about the Red Wings’ start and turmoil off the ice, plus PWHL Detroit’s Western Conference placement and schedule reveal. The conversation also covers Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren’s contracts, the Tigers’ season-ending press conference with Scott Harris and A.J. Hinch, and Detroit City FC’s playoff berth with regular-season matches still ahead.

The Crew gathered in the tunnel again this week... and somehow an unexpected jersey delivery, a shirtless encounter with a stranger and the proposed Channel 4:51 OnlyFans all occurred before anyone remembered this was supposed to be a Detroit City FC podcast.

Eventually, the crew gets down to business with a blind ranking of Detroit City’s English players. Dave Edwardson, Ben Morris, Omar Sinclair, Will Mellors-Blair and Danny Deakin enter the rankings—and almost everyone immediately regrets the decisions being made.

Then it’s time to recap seven points from three matches. Le Rouge defeated Pittsburgh, survived a certified snoozefest against Colorado Springs and escaped Brooklyn with a 3–1 victory. Darren Smith delivered, Callum Montgomery restored Detroit’s lead and Kobe Hernandez-Foster launched an approximately 80-yard wondergoal from another postal district.

The crew examines Danny Dichio’s successful midweek rotation, the substitutes who changed the Brooklyn match and a penalty decision so ridiculous that even a future “VAR-lite” system should be able to overturn it. With City firmly in third place, they also survey the playoff picture and debate whether Pittsburgh, Louisville or Rhode Island would be the least unpleasant first-round opponent.

There are also stories from Detroit City’s charity jersey auctions, the questionable aroma of match-worn kits and predictions for Birmingham Legion’s visit to Keyworth. Two members of the crew predict a sensible 2–0 City win. One predicts 4–0 because restraint has never been a Channel 4:51 value.

Finally, Red shares a powerful account of accompanying a recently released immigrant to an ICE check-in through Strangers No Longer—before the traditional Tunnel Talk shout-outs return the show to its regularly scheduled level of chaos.

Sean Spence and Adam Hernandez break down Detroit City FC’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Colorado Springs and the 3-1 win at Brooklyn that clinched a playoff berth. From an attack struggling to connect to Kobe Hernández-Foster’s outrageous finish from deep inside his own half, there’s plenty to unpack.

The guys discuss Darren Smith finding the net again, Callum Montgomery’s quick answer to Brooklyn’s equalizer, Maxi Rodriguez’s influence, and what a heavily rotated lineup revealed about City’s depth. Then it’s on to Birmingham, the push for a home playoff match, and whether this team has another gear for the postseason.

Plus: disputed penalties spark a debate over VAR and USL officiating, before Sean and Adam turn to Manchester City’s financial-rules case, football’s power structure, and what meaningful punishment should look like.

Make City Make Spence returns with Sean Spence and Adam Hernandez breaking down Detroit City FC's uneven two-match stretch: a flat 1-0 loss at Sacramento followed by a gritty 1-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Kian Williams’ first goal for Le Rouge.

The guys examine why DCFC’s defense, Carlos Herrera and its structured buildup look ready for a playoff run while the attack continues searching for consistent finishing. They also discuss the instant impact of Kian Williams, Alex Dalou and Cheikhou Niang, the club’s improved depth amid a growing injury list, and a pivotal stretch against Colorado Springs and Brooklyn that could secure a postseason berth and strengthen Detroit’s top-four position.

Derrick Barnes and his son arrived at Ford Field in matching Spider-Man suits before the Lions faced the Saints. 🕷️🦁

Who picked the better game-day outfit?
ean Spence and Adam Hernandez return to examine two Detroit City FC draws that produced very different reactions. The hosts break down the scoreless trip to Louisville, City’s statistically dominant 1-1 result against Hartford and the controversial last-minute penalty that erased Maxi Rodriguez’s apparent winner.

Detroit continues to look like a team with an excellent defense and midfield—but without the finishing touch needed to turn control into victories. With Darren Smith managing an injury and goals becoming increasingly difficult to find, Sean and Adam turn their attention to Cheikhou Niang, the new 6-foot-6 forward arriving on loan from FC Cincinnati 2.

Can Niang provide a new attacking dimension during the stretch run? The discussion covers his development, physical profile and potential role as Detroit City pushes toward the USL Championship playoffs.

The crew gathers in the tunnel once again this week to unpack two draws with two very different feelings. Detroit City FC survives a quiet trip to Louisville with a point, then watches Maxi Rodriguez’s apparent stoppage-time winner against Hartford slip away following an even later penalty at Keyworth.

Was the call against Chisom Egbuchulam fair—or did all that smoke get in the way? The crew examines City’s persistent scoring problems, the availability of Darren Smith and Ates Diouf, and whether Maxi Rodriguez, Kian Williams, Alex Dalou or Michael Bryant can provide the needed attacking spark.

They also preview the cross-country trip to Sacramento Republic, offer match and goalscorer predictions, assign themselves questionable television lower-thirds and deliver a few overdue apologies.
