The Alex Rodriguez era as a player with the New York Yankees will be coming to an end.

In a Sunday morning press conference, Rodriguez and the team announced that next Friday (August 12th) against the Rays will be the former three-time AL MVP’s final game. Afterwards, the Yankees will release A-Rod and hire him as a special advisor/instructor with the team.

Today’s announcement can’t come as too much of a surprise for Rodriguez whose been extremely ineffective for most of the year. Currently the designated hitter is is batting just .204 with a .252 OBP and .356 slugging in 62 games played. It was rumored up until this point that the Yankees may release the 14-time All-Star however it appears they’ll let the 41-year old go out on his own terms… somewhat.

At one time it was thought A-Rod would eventually break Barry Bonds’ home run record. But I guess he’ll have to settle with being one of three players with 600 home runs, 300 stolen bases, 2,000 runs scored and a 10-time silver slugger.

In addition to Rodriguez, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira announced he’ll retire at the end of the 2016 season.
