A quarter-century ago Steve Yzerman and the Red Wings broke some St. Louis hearts

It’s hard to believe this Steve Yzerman goal was now a quarter-century ago. Obviously, it does in some sense considering how brutal things have been for the Red Wings in recent years but moments like this too always feel like they happened yesterday.

Undeniably, this is one of the greatest goals in Red Wings history considering who scored it and what the stakes were at the time. Not to mention too it was Wayne Gretzky who turned over the puck for St. Louis which led to the goal. And I know, it’s also actually hard to believe Gretzky actually played for the Blues.

Unfortunately for those of us who can remember that postseason clearly, things didn’t end well for Detroit. The Wings would go on to lose in the Western Conference finals against the Avalanche, a series that would lead way to the bitter rivalry with Colorado when Claude Lemieux rearranged Kris Draper’s face in one of the dirtiest plays you’ll ever see in an NHL game. The Avalanche would go on to win the Stanley Cup that season in 1996 while the Detroit dynasty would have to wait just one more year.
