In the midst of his best pro season to date, Boston Red Sox star JD Martinez is your next athlete being called out for asinine social media posts from the past.

There are however some differences this time around.

First the post in question is on Instagram from over five and a half years ago when the outfielder was 25-years-old. It depicts Adolf Hitler with a quote from the dictator saying “To conquer a nation, First disarm it’s (sic) citizens.” Martinez then captions it saying “This is why I always stay strapped! #thetruth.”

Okay… there’s a few items we can take from this.

  1. There must be something about Boston Red Sox players using a genocidal madman to try and make a point. (I.e. Curt Schilling)
  2. On that note, it’s probably a good idea to not use Hitler in any attempt to make a point no matter how valid or necessary you believe it to be.
  3. J.D. Martinez may be one of those right-wing conspiracy ‘don’t take mah guns’ nut jobs. I’m now wondering if he listens to Alex Jones on a daily basis or is a frequent visitor to Info Wars?
  4. Sure this isn’t as bad as some of the resurfaced racist and homophobic tweets from guys like Josh Hader or Sean Newcomb, but JD was 25 at this point an any ‘stupid kid’ defense is out the door.
  5. Why don’t athletes and public figures just scrub their fucking social media accounts?
