NCAA suspends MSU's Tom Izzo

As you may have heard earlier on The Majors Detroit Facebook page, the NCAA has suspended MSU men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo for one game.
According to Matt Charboneau of the Detroit News, the NCAA suspended Izzo for employing “an individual associated with a prospect” during MSU’s annual basketball camp. The individuals name hasn’t been made public but it has been determined that the person in question did make roughly $475 dollars for five days of work during the camp in which they worked with middle school kids.

“I’ve always placed a high importance on following the rules and pride myself on adhering to high standards of professional conduct and doing things the right way,” Izzo said in a statement released Friday night. “This is an isolated and inadvertent secondary violation of a new rules interpretation. I regret that it happened.”
MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis also commented on the situation…
“With Coach Izzo sitting out a game, the case is closed. With the penalty seems severe for a secondary violation, this is a new mandate from the NCAA and the Basketball Focus Group by which we will abide.”
Like what Mark Hollis this is a relatively new rule put in place by the NCAA and really should be no issue going forward. Izzo has been well known for running clean successful programs and this blemish shouldn’t do much of anything to take away from that. So if you’re looking for Tom Izzo to become the John Calipari of the Big Ten you can keep on looking.
Izzo will serve his suspension Saturday when the Spartans take on Prairie View at the Breslin Center at 6:30PM ET. Assistant coach Mark Montgomery will take the reigns while Izzo is out.
