With the NHL looking at a divisional realignment, Major League Baseball may do some realigning of their own.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney who cites various sources, Major League Baseball and its players association have been talking realignment and it is a topic that is being seriously considered.
Currently the American League has a total of 14 teams divided into 3 divisions while the National League has 16 teams divided into 3 divisions. MLB would be looking to have 15 teams in league and potentially doing away with the three divisions altogether. Furthermore with the elimination of the divisions, each team in the American and National leagues would be fighting for five playoff spots in each of the two leagues.
So what are the odds of this happening?
According to a source the chances of this happening remain 50-50.
Now a big question that comes up in all of this is what team out of the National league makes the jump to the American league?
According to the article, many high-ranking executives believe it could be the Houston Astros. This would be to develop a rivalry with the Texas Rangers.
“There are still a lot of details that would have to be discussed,” one source said.
