Johnny Football is now Mr. Heisman.
After flourishing in Kevin Sumlin’s offense… in his first season, Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel took home the 2012 Hesiman Trophy becoming the first freshman ever to win college football’s most prestigious award. In fact it wasn’t until Tim Tebow won five years ago that a Sophomore first won the honors.
Manziel beat out Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o and Kansas State’s Collin Klein after posting unbelievable 2012 numbers. The freshman quarterback accumulated 1,000 yards rushing to go along with 19 touchdowns on the ground. Manziel also averaged 8.5 yards per pass, completing 68% of his passes, and throwing for over 3,400 yards with 24 touchdowns.
Te’o ended making history of his own after being one of the most decorated college football players of all time. The Notre Dame linebacker who was truly an inspiration this season and a more than likely top 10 pick in April’s NFL Draft finished second with 321 first place votes and 1,706 points. This outcome was the second highest ever for a second place finisher and most for a pure defensive player. Klein finished third 60 first place votes and 894 points. Marqise Lee finished 4th and Braxton Miller finished 5th in the Heisman voting.
