QB controversy brewing for Michigan in 2012?

As starting QB Denard Robinson continues to be inconsistent, Michigan head coach Brady Hoke hasn’t been afraid to turn to back up sophomore Devin Gardner.

A lot of the argument between Michigan fans though this season has been whether or not Michigan should turn to Gardner full-time.

That argument will probably carry over into next season as both Robinson and Gardner are expected back with the program.

But will more inconsistent play from Robinson and the continued debate boil over into a full-fledged quarterback controversy for the Wolverines in 2012?

Here’s what ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg has to say regarding the potential issue…

“It’s hard to project what Michigan will do next year at quarterback. We’ll find out a lot more in these final four games. Denard has regressed as a passer and still makes too many mistakes to win consistently in the Big Ten. Devin is a tremendous athlete but still must make strides in his development. I agree [offensive coordinator] Al Borges is shuffling the two a bit too much, but he’s trying to make something happen.”

As Michigan continues to transition into more of a pro-style offense you’d have to figure that Brady Hoke will give serious consideration at starting 2012 with Devin Gardner under center. Especially if there’s more considerable regress in Denard Robinson’s passing ability.
