Bucs sign paralyzed LeGrand as an undrafted free agent

In what instantly became the most inspirational signing of the NFL offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former Rutgers tackle Eric LeGrand who was paralyzed while covering a kick return for the Scarlett Knights in 201o.

LeGrand previously played for Greg Schiano at Rutgers who was named the new head coach of the Buccaneers this offseason.

LeGrand’s story is certainly remarkable though since the injury already defying odds in his recovery. Originally being told that he would never get off a respirator, LeGrand made enough progress to rid himself of that within five months.

Now he’s hoping that one day he can walk again.

“Leading up to the draft, I couldn’t help but think that this should’ve been Eric’s draft class,” Schiano said on the Bucs’ Web site. “This small gesture is the least we could do to recognize his character, spirit, and perseverance. The way Eric lives his life epitomizes what we are looking for in Buccaneer Men.”

LeGrand is scheduled to graduate from Rutgers in the fall with a degree in labor studies. He’s also hoping to get work in the broadcast booth which IMG is helping him accomplish.
