Portugal is moving on, but nothing about it came easy.
In one of the wildest finishes of the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage so far, Portugal survived a late scare to beat Croatia 2-1 in Toronto, advancing to a massive last-16 matchup against Spain.
Gonçalo Ramos Delivers the Winner
The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time.
Gonçalo Ramos rose between Croatian defenders and headed home the winning goal in the 94th minute, keeping Portugal’s World Cup alive after a tense second half.
For Ramos, it was the perfect super-sub moment. Cristiano Ronaldo had been substituted in the 81st minute, leaving Portugal to chase the winner without its captain on the field.
Ronaldo Finally Gets His Knockout Goal
Before the chaos, Ronaldo delivered a career milestone that had somehow eluded him.
The Portugal captain scored from the penalty spot in the 68th minute, marking the first World Cup knockout-stage goal of his career. The goal pulled Portugal level after Ivan Perišić had given Croatia the lead early in the second half.
The penalty also added another historic note to Ronaldo’s final World Cup run. At 41, he became the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout match, while continuing a tournament in which he also became the first man to score in six different World Cups.
Croatia Nearly Forces Extra Time
Croatia thought it had found one last escape.
In the 13th minute of stoppage time, Joško Gvardiol appeared to score an equalizer, setting off wild celebrations. After a video review, the goal was ruled out for offside, ending Croatia’s hopes and sending Portugal through.
The decision ended a frantic closing stretch filled with VAR drama, late pressure, and emotional swings.
End of an Era for Croatia
The loss could mark the end of Luka Modrić’s World Cup career.
The Croatia captain shared the field again with former Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo, but Croatia’s run ended in heartbreak after years of deep tournament success, including a 2018 final appearance and 2022 semifinal run.
Portugal Gets Spain Next
Portugal’s reward is not much of a reward.
The win sets up a last-16 meeting with Spain, one of the most anticipated matchups of the tournament. Spain advanced with a 3-0 win over Austria, setting the stage for a heavyweight rivalry match.
What It Means
For Portugal, this was survival.
For Ronaldo, it was history.
For Croatia, it was heartbreak.
Portugal did not look flawless, but knockout soccer rarely rewards clean narratives. It rewards teams that survive the mess. On Thursday, Portugal survived enough.
