There was plenty of buzz heading into this year’s GM Meetings in Las Vegas about Tigers ace Tarik Skubal and whether Detroit might consider trading the now two-time AL Cy Young Award winner as he enters the final year of his contract. But as the meetings wrapped up, Skubal remains a Tiger — and speculation continues on both ends of the rumor mill.

“Tarik is a Detroit Tiger,” GM Jeff Greenberg said. “We know how good he is. We’re not going to talk about our players in the context of trade or extension. He’s a Tiger. We’re happy to have him. Trading our own players isn’t something we’re going to discuss.”

According to ESPN, the likelihood of a Skubal trade this offseason remains low, largely due to Detroit’s significant asking price as the hot stove begins to heat up.

Beyond Skubal, the Tigers are also awaiting a decision from Gleyber Torres, who received a qualifying offer from the club last week. Torres continues to explore the market, though word around the league suggests he is still weighing Detroit’s offer.

Finally, despite skepticism from fans after a quiet offseason last year and an uneventful trade deadline, the Tigers insist they are looking to improve the roster this winter.

“That could come through free agency or trade,” Greenberg said. “Some of that has to come through internal improvement as well. We’ll stay open-minded on all those avenues as we take the next steps from where we’ve been the last two years.”
