A 21-year-old man from Macomb reportedly passed away from injuries sustained when he fell down an elevator shaft at the abandoned Southwest Detroit Hospital on the border of Corktown and Mexicantown in Detroit.
According to the Metro Detroit News, an unidentified individual and a group of friends are reported to have entered the building in the 2400 block of 20th Street around 1:30 a.m. ET. Emergency crews were eventually called to the scene after the man fell down the five-story elevator shaft.
The site is the future home of Detroit City FC’s new stadium, which is set to open in 2027, with demolition at the site scheduled for this summer.
The building itself originally opened in 1973 as the first hospital in Detroit to hire African-American doctors. The original hospital eventually declared bankruptcy and closed in 1991. However, the hospital reopened in 1997 as United Community Hospital, but once again suffered financial issues and closed for good in 2006.
