In light of all the injuries on defense, the Lions are reportedly adding three-time Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams to the team’s practice squad with the expectation that he’s elevated to the main roster according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The move would definitely give defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn some options despite not necessarily being thin at the safety spot with Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph being healthy (knock of wood). The addition of Adams could open up Branch to be moved around and provide some additional help inside the box with the Lions now being down two key linebackers in Alex Anzalone (broken arm) and Malcolm Rodriguez (torn ACL). Additionally, with Ifeatu Melifonwu hitting the IR for the second time this season, Adams also provides some depth in the Lions’ secondary as Brad Holmes and company move into the final stretch of the season while looking to lock up that No. 1 spot in the NFC.

The 29-year-old Jamal Adams has had a significant impact since being drafted sixth overall by the New York Jets in 2017. After playing three Pro Bowl seasons with the Jets, he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in a blockbuster deal, where he became an important part of their formidable defense. Despite his contributions on the field, Adams struggled with injuries, appearing in only 34 of 67 games. This led to the Seahawks cutting him before the current season as part of their strategy to get younger and save on salary cap space.

After signing late with the Tennessee Titans during the offseason, Adams would appear in just 20 snaps over four games before requesting his release.
