Cameron Maybin and Todd Jones hired by Bally Sports for Tigers’ broadcasts, Craig Monroe promoted to the booth

The Tigers television broadcast is getting a much-needed facelift for the upcoming season.

Bally Sports Detroit’s parent company Diamond Sports Group has reportedly hired former Tigers players Todd Jones and Cameron Maybin for the television broadcast while promoting Craig Monroe to the primary in-game analyst alongside the returning Matt Shepherd who’ll once again serve as the play-by-play man.

The network, owned by Diamond Sports Group, has hired former MLB players Cameron Maybin and Todd Jones to work Detroit Tigers games on the TV broadcast throughout the 2023 season, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Craig Monroe has been elevated as the primary in-game analyst, alongside returning play-by-play announcer Matt Shepard. The 45-year-old Monroe, who played six of his nine seasons for the Tigers and competed in the 2006 World Series, joined the talent lineup in 2012.

Bally Sports Detroit is expected to make an announcement Thursday.

Monroe’s elevation is certainly a welcomed one considering how stale the Tigers’ television broadcasts have gotten since the departures of Rod Allen and Mario Impemba. Monroe’s promotion also thankfully marks the end of Jack Morris’ tenure with the broadcast as Bally and the former Tigers pitcher mutually agreed to part ways after the hall of fame was offered a reduced role with the network. Morris became a regular on Tigers broadcasts back in 2019, however, his time was largely marked by a racist comment he made toward Shohei Ohtani which he was ultimately suspended 23 days for.

Bally Sports Detroit now enters 2023 with six members of their television broadcast team including Matt Shepard who again will do the play-by-play, Craig Monroe as the primary in-game analyst, Kirk Gibson who returns as an in-game analyst, Dan Petry as the primary studio analyst, and Cameron Maybin and Jones who will join Petry in the studio.
