Tottenham Hotspur’s thrilling 3-2 win over Aston Villa over the weekend when news broke that the Spurs have suffered yet another devastating injury.
Tuesday it was revealed that Heung-Min Son — who had two goals against the Lions including the game-winner in extra time — suffered a broken arm and will be out for several weeks putting any return this season in serious jeopardy.
Here’s the statement from Tottenham:
Heung-Min Son is to undergo surgery this week after sustaining a fracture to his right arm.
The South Korea international suffered the injury during our win against Aston Villa on Sunday.
Following surgery, our medical staff shall be reviewing management options for Son’s rehabilitation with the player expected to be sidelined for a number of weeks.
Son currently has 16 goals in 32 games this season and is notably one of the most underrated players in the Premier League. Not only that, this injury hurts that much more (no pun intended) when you take into account that Harry Kane’s return is still nowhere in sight after the English striker tore his hamstring earlier in the campaign.
Spurs manager Jose Mourinho acknowledged the predicament his club is in going forward as they try to make up for a tremendous loss in offensive production:
“The situation couldn’t be worse in terms of options. It’s a very, very obvious situation. There is nothing that you can do. We are going to play with the players that we have available. The players are going to give everything, which is what they are doing. In some periods I was worried about not having attacking options on the bench, now it’s not having attacking options on the pitch.”
Tottenham stood silent during last month’s transfer window when it came to signing a striker when they were already down Kane so it’s not like looking back on that is some hindsight situation. Now the Spurs are left with just Lucas Moura and new signing Steven Bergwijn as the only remaining senior forwards available at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Meanwhile, Mourinho suggested a change in approach going forward after ruling out Spurs academy graduate Troy Parrott as getting a callup to the senior squad simply stating that the 18-year-old “isn’t ready”.
