Tigers expected to offer big money for Cespedes

Something the Tigers haven’t really been known to do is get into bidding wars for players. It hasn’t been the style of the organization or team president Dave Dombrowski. You would think that this would especially be the case with a relatively unknown Cuban player like Yoenis Cespedes.

That however isn’t the case…

According to Lynn Henning of the Detroit News, the Tigers may be prepared to offer in upwards of $50 million dollars for Cespedes who appears to be very talented but against somewhat unknown.

His 46-inch vertical leap. His blazing sprints to first base and beyond. His power. His ability to track down balls that otherwise might bound against outfield fences. All are reasons why assorted teams, the Tigers included, are expected to offer Cespedes as much as $50 million or more to sign him once his protracted residency issues are settled.

The good news is that if any team in the MLB knows Cespedes, it would be the Tigers. Henning writes that Detroit has scouted Cespedes well before he defected from Cuba. $50 million however is still a big risk to take on a player that has never played an MLB game.
