In what was supposed to be one of the more intriguing early season matchups turned out to be one of those games that the Wings would surely like to forget about.
The Wings suffered their first loss of the season 7-1 at the hands of the Washington Capitals who remain undefeated (6-0) on the season.
Niklas Kronwall had the Wings’ lone goal which came on the power play.
For the Capitals, Mike Green had two power-play goals, Mathieu Perreault had two goals, and Marcus Johansson, Nicklas Backstrom and Joel Ward added Washington goals.
Ty Conklin, who’s looked good for the Wings in-goal up until tonight made 18 saves on 25 shots.
The Majors Detroit Player of the Game: Tomas Vokoun has been very good for the Capitals so far this season and tonight was no exception. He made 32 saves on 33 shots.
The Majors Detroit Zero of the Game: I never like to place too much blame on the goaltenders but tonight Conklin was off his game.
Looking Ahead: The Wings will look to rebound from tonight’s loss Tuesday night when they head to Columbus to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets who will be looking for some revenge after their 5-2 loss to the Wings Friday night.
The Bottom Line: The Wings are a veteran team and will not dwell on this loss too much. Now of course this is a game that the Wings would’ve loved to have (or at least made a better showing at) but it’s a long season and these types of games are going to happen.
