Tigers Notes: Boesch, Guillen, Alburquerque

Here are some various noteworthy items from James Schmehl of Mlive.com following Detroit’s 5-4 victory over Kansas City earlier today…

  • Recently Tigers head trainer Kevin Rand came out and said that outfielder Brennan Boesch will eventually need surgery on his thumb to correct a slightly torn ligament. Jim Leyland stated today that he’s going to have to be careful with Boesch from here on out, “Boesch can’t hit and I have to be careful with him,” Leyland said. “The game is different so you play with what you’ve got.”
  • Tigers infielder Carlos Guillen could make his return to the lineup this Friday when the Tigers open up a big weekend series with the Chicago White Sox from Comerica Park. Guillen has been out since August 13th with a sore wrist and is eligible to come back now however the Tigers opted to send him on a rehab assignment in Triple-A. During this rehab assignment Guillen went 4-for-5 with two runs scored for Toledo on Tuesday and is hitting .625 with three doubles and an RBI in his past two rehab starts.
  • In addition to Guillen, Leyland also said that Magglio Ordonez could get a start Friday as well. Since the club acquired Delmon Young from the Minnesota Twins, Ordonez has gone 5/18 in his past five appearances. He’s also riding a six-game hitting streak and is batting .318 since August 15th.
  • Tigers reliever Al Alburquerque is scheduled to throw another side session Thursday as he continues to recover from a concussion that has kept him out of action since August 12th. After throwing a 15 pitch side session on Tuesday, Alburquerque isn’t expected to be activated on Thursday as Leyland originally hoped.
  • Tigers catcher Alex Avila continues to get beat up behind the plate. Avila received several stitches after taking a foul ball on his off the bat of Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar on the second to last pitch of Wednesdays game.
