Is this a sign of another second half collapse for the Tigers?
During Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, Tigers firstbaseman Miguel Cabrera suffered a strained oblique on his right side during a check swing in the 6th inning.
“The trainer came and told me that Cabrera said he felt something in his side,” American League manager Ron Washington said. “The trainer said it’s just a slight strain of the right oblique.”
Cabrera seemed to downplay the incident saying he was fine however there is now way of knowing whether or not Cabrera will be able to play on Friday when the Tigers take on the Chicago White Sox.
The oblique muscle is attached to the rib cage so it plays an important role in the players swinging of the bat.
According to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press this is something that the Tigers need to be very cautious of. Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays suffered a strained oblique muscle on the second game of the season. He ended up missing a months worth of action and the Rays suffered in his absence.
On the other side of things, Lowe points out that former Tiger Curtis Granderson had an oblique injury during Spring Training and there were questions on whether or not he would be ready for opening day. He ended up being fine and went on to hit the game winning home run against his former team.
One final positive note that Lowe mentions is Cabrera has never spent time on the DL in his 9 year MLB career. Hopefully that doesn’t start now.
