According to Steve Kornacki of Mlive.com, Tigers pitching coach Rick Knapp says that reliever Joel Zumaya had a magnetic resonance imaging test and been examined by doctors but will now see another physician regarding the matter.
When asked on whether or not Zumaya would see world renowned physician Dr. James Andrews, Knapp deflected those questions to head trainer Kevin Rand who also wouldnโt discuss the situation.
โI will comment on that when itโs appropriate,โ Rand said.
Rand also went on to say that Zumaya would not even pick up a baseball until he is pain free. Zumaya has experienced problems after having scar tissue separate near the area where a screw was inserted in his right elbow last summer.
Zumaya recently asked not to discuss the situation, saying, โDonโt ask me about that right now. Theyโve got all the answers. I donโt even have answers.โ
The last time Zumaya played was February 27th against the Blue Jays when Zumaya threw a scoreless inning in Lakeland. Zumaya hasnโt thrown since.
โNothing has shown up out of the ordinary on the tests,โ Knapp said. โHe went full-bore and had discomfort. Itโs in the doctorโs hands now.
โHeโs got hardware in his elbow and that canโt be good. But plenty of guys have come back from it. Joel has that high-torque delivery that generates so much stress. Itโs an oddity. And when you suffer an injury, you always want to protect it.โ
