Tigers’ head trainer Kevin Rand says reliever Joel Zumaya has been cleared to resume playing catch by world renowned orthopedic specialist James Andrews during his Wednesday examination that included a scan. This is according to Steve Kornacki of Mlive.com.

“He has good range of motion and strength,” Rand said, “and is pain free. He’ll throw at 60 feet for five or six days, and report back to Dr. Andrews. It’s the best thing he could’ve hoped for.”

Joel Zumaya and infielder Carlos Guillen both remain sidelined and will not be part of the opening day introductions at Comerica Park on Friday. Zumaya is still recovering from a sore right elbow that ended his season last year while Guillen is still recovering from a left knee injury again an injury he sustained last season.
