Various Detroit Media outlets, including Steve Kornacki of Mlive.com are reporting that Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera will miss an ‘unspecified’ amount of time after being arrested Wednesday night for DUI.
Tigers President and GM Dave Dombrowski echoed this Saturday and furthermore stated that Cabrera will have to be examined by a Doctor under the direction of Major League Baseball to address his apparent problems with alcohol. Kornacki also mentioned that Tigers physicians will also examine Cabrera at a later date.
“Any time you deal with alcoholism,” Dombrowski said, ” … it’s really an on-going battle.”
Now in terms of the ‘unspecified’ amount of time that Cabrera will be out as he is examined by doctors, Tigers President Dave Dombrowski doesn’t seem to believe Cabrera’s absence will carry over into the regular season.
“I don’t set the program,” Dombrowski said of the MLB involvement. “The regular season is a ways away. Most are 30-day programs.”
Dombrowski also said that he would be surprised if Cabrera was suspended for any regular season games.
In terms of what happened Wednesday night, Dombrowski said that Cabrera’s 2005 Land Rover broke down on the side of the road with radiator problems. He didn’t have a working cellphone before being approached by the St. Lucie County Sheriffs Office.
The Tigers open up their exhibition season Friday when they play Florida Southern College before playing Grapefruit League games beginning on February 26th at Dunedin against the Toronto Blue Jays. If Cabrera isn’t available before then Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that catcher and designated hitter Victor Martinez and utility man Don Kelly will share time at the position.
