Steve Kornacki of Mlive.com actually posted this on Mlive.com a couple days ago but I thought it was worth mentioning here. Apparently during the Tigers last stop in Cleveland, former Indians infielder Jhonny Peralta was visiting his former teammates and began talking to his good friend Shin-Soo Choo. During this conversation Choo had some interesting comments to Peralta about the Tigers when he becomes a free agent. Here is what Peralta had to say about that conversation…
“We were running in the outfield to loosen up before the game,” Peralta said. “Choo came up to me and hugged me. He said he missed me and added, ‘When I’m a free agent, I want to go to Detroit.’ He’s a really good guy.”
“A couple guys asked me that,” Peralta said. “They say, ‘Wow, you’re doing so good in Detroit.’ I say it’s so different. It’s good to play baseball here with this team. I feel really good right now with everything that I’m doing — defense and offense. They’re happy with what I do, and I’m happy, too.”
Choo currently leads MLB with 13 outfield assists and leads the Indians with 20 home runs and 86 RBIs while batting .297. He isn’t set to become a free agent for another three more years.
It seems as though Detroit is becoming more of an attractive destination for free agents or potential free agents. However I don’t believe this interest is solely based on the desire to play for this city, I think it has more to do with the simple fact that the Tigers will be willing to pay more for free agents. This could be due to the ownerships desire to win but it also may be because Detroit, and I hate saying this because I personally love the area and the city, isn’t a desired destination for many free agents.
I may be looking to much into this but Choo definitely is a player I wouldn’t mind having in Detroit so long as his offensive numbers stay where they are. Once Choo hits free agency he will be going on 31 so a multi year deal, lets say 3 years wouldn’t and shouldn’t be out of the question. Again this is all depending on how his numbers are looking then.
