Friday the Santa Clara Police Union sent a letter to the 49ers threatening to withdraw their services from games if the team “fails to take action” against Colin Kaepernick and his “inappropriate” workplace behavior.
Or his criticism of the police force in the United States.
The board of directors of the Santa Clara Police Officers Association has a duty to protect its members and work to make all of their working environments free of harassing behavior. SCPOA members have worked thousands of hours at Levi’s stadium, 49er training camp and headquarters protecting guests, players and fellow employees. Our officers voluntarily agree to work these assignments. if the 49ers organization fails to take action to stop this type of inappropriate workplace behavior, it could result in police officers choosing not to work at your facilities. Please contact us as soon as possible with the corrective actions your organization intends on implementing.
Officers at Levi’s Stadium come from a variety of different departments in the Bay Area however the Santa Clara PD accounts for roughly 70 officers on 49ers game day according to NBC Bay Area. But since the 49ers, and the one-player in Kaepernick who’s conducting his silent protest the SCPD feels as though they’re working in a harassing environment. This of course is despite what seems to be on overwhelming outcry from the public over Kaepernick’s statements speaking out against the Police and refusing to stand for the National Anthem.
Ironically though, Kaepernick’s arguments against corruption and the need to reform within the police force is in some ways being proven by the Santa Clara Police Union’s threats. Again, one player speaking out is enough to put thousands of other people’s safety at risk?
